Based on the interest in our session at the 2005 APHA Meeting (Epidemiology Education in Grades 6-12), a panel of supporters of epidemiology education in grades 6-12 will report on the steps taken in the following areas during the past year to further what is becoming a “movement.”

a. Developing epidemiology curricula. b. Preparing teachers to teach epidemiology. c. Creating demand for epidemiology education. d. Maintaining momentum in interest in epidemiology education.

Reports will include a description of what happened, the challenges confronted and steps taken to address them, support received from others, the role of serendipity, and what was actually accomplished. The panelists and attendees will discuss the role of the public health community in pursuing the goals of the Epidemiology Education Movement:

a. Infusing epidemiology education into curricula in grades 6-12. b. Improving scientific literacy. c. Increasing the number of students preparing for careers in public health.

The session will conclude by asking attendees to consider working towards achieving these goals.

  • Review and assess the steps that have been taken during the past year to achieve the Epidemiology Education Movement’s objectives
    a. Develop epidemiology curricula. b. Prepare teachers to teach epidemiology. c. Create demand for epidemiology education. d. Maintain momentum in interest in epidemiology education.
    • Continue the discussion of Identifying the challenges of infusing epidemiology education into grades 6-12 and ways the public health community can address these challenges.
