Prevention of violence within the family is a developing science. One strategy, Family Violence Death Review, is spreading internationally with an estimated 1,000 multi-agency teams in at least five nations for Child Death Review (CDR). Domestic Violence Fatality Review (DVFR) and Elder Abuse Fatality Review (EAFR). Team memberships include health, social services and criminal justice. Public health team members provide expertise with data systems and community based prevention. Teams provide public health with more sophisticated data and connections to multiple professions.

Support systems include the, ICAN National Center on Child Fatality Review (ICAN-NCFR), International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse/Neglect (ISPCAN), APHA developing caucus on Family Violence Prevention, and World Health Organization, (WHO) that is adding child death review to it's literature.

Child death review began in 1978 and spread to all states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Philippines with a hospital based model for developing countries. Teams are beginning in U.K. and Netherlands with plans in Jordan and Japan. Over 150 countries have visited the ican-ncfr.org web page. The National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative and ICAN-NCFR connect child and adult victim review.

Four hundred reports from 75 teams provide data. Prevention programs include: Safe Sleeping, Don't Shake Your Baby and Safe Surrender of unwanted newborns. Overlap with public health includes Maternal Child Health issues and injury prevention programs. More complex networks are underway. Public health will benefit, but, public health professionals need to understand death review and participate. Models for public health participation will be discussed.
