The emergence of ICD-10-CM brings anticipation about changes that will occur from the change from ICD-9 to ICD-10. Important areas of concern are the impact on public health reporting and epidemiologic research. Consideration should be given to how the codes are assigned and the difference in breadth captured by ICD-9 and ICD-10. One major difference between the systems is an updated design in ICD-10-CM to more easily accommodate changes and additions in public health disease capturing and reporting. The ability to update the systems is important in light of newly evolving diseases such as AIDS, SARS, and avian flu as well as potential acts of bioterrorism and biosurveillance efforts.

The presentation will review the findings from recent research that looked at several aspects of ICD-10 related to this discussion. The presentation will include how the completeness of the ICD-10-CM system in capturing public health diseases was evaluated, measurements of the effectiveness and efficiency of ICD-10-CM in public health reporting, and feedback from focus groups on how applicable the ICD-10-CM system is in relation to capturing public health diseases and related procedures.
