Background: This study describes the process of developing theory- and evidence-informed role model stories that aim to encourage HIV testing among college students. Methods: An interview guide was developed to collect information needed to develop the role model stories. The development of the guide was formed by existing literature, theories, as well as a planning framework called “Intervention Mapping”. College students who agreed to participate in the study were interviewed by a trained research staff. Each interview was tape recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by two trained researchers. Results: Six role model stories were successfully developed. Based on real-life stories obtained, messages containing theoretical constructs and insights gained from prior needs assessment were carefully integrated. These stories, along with HIV relevant information were presented to a convenience group of college students to pilot test their reactions and responses (n=35). Preliminary assessment showed that stories were viewed relevant, and were effective in raising awareness and increasing intentions to obtain an HIV test. The interview guide, as well as sample stories with the underpinning theoretical constructs highlighted will be shared. Conclusions: Role model stories developed from target group increase the chance that learners could identify with the model. In addition, messages incorporate theory-based constructs and integrate real-life concerns to reveal a coping model can potentially effective encouraging HIV testing behavior among college students.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to
