What do participants and organizations actually achieve as a result of a leadership development investment? What is the actual “return on investment” (ROI)? In 2002-4, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Public Health invested in leadership development training for 104 senior managers. The Los Angeles Public Health Leadership Institute (LAPHLI) provided leadership skills training focused on intra-organizational collaboration. This presentation will highlight some of the results and impact of LAPHLI within the Department. Results include: 1) A self-governed leadership forum of graduates; 2) Collaborative change projects that are producing results; 3) Movement towards a coaching/mentoring culture; 4) A succession planning approach that includes a long-term leadership/management skills development plan for growing future leaders from within; and 5) Foundational support for organizational change and the new Departmental strategic planning process. These activities are being accomplished in partnership with the Center for Health Leadership and Practice, Public Health Institute.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) Describe the investment in leadership development by Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Public Health. 2) Describe the impact of leadership development on public health senior managers. 3) Identify at least one leadership development activity that can be initiated in a participant's organization.
