Smart Growth, Transportation Policy and the Impact on the Environment — Lessons Learned and Future Implications
Recent years have seen an increasing trend toward smart growth principles, a more rationale and effective transportation policy, and their impact on our health and the environment. This session will feature a former governor and leading smart growth advocate, the President of the Surface Transportation Policy Project and the new director of CDC National Center for Environmental Health. They will discuss the connection between smart growth, transportation policy and healthy environments, and the best practices and lessons learned from the devastation on the Gulf Coast. They will offer suggestions on rebuilding this area and creating a community that promotes and maximizes personal and public health.
Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to understand the potential of smart growth, national transportation policy and their public health impact. Attendees will be able to describe how these communities were built in a way that contributed to loss of property and life. They will be able to describe the lessons learned from this disaster and how to take positive steps to improve public health and protect the environment.
