New Dietary Guidelines, My Pyramid & Implementation
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) form the basis for national nutrition policy in the United States. The DGAs were first issued in 1980 and are updated every five years by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services following a review of the current science by a formal federal advisory panel. The 2005 DGAs include some significant changes from past versions, reflecting completion of the decade long update of the Dietary Reference Intakes by the Institute of Medicine. The 2005 DGAs were recently issued, and have been used to update the 1992 Food Guide Pyramid to “MyPyramid”, a widely-used graphic symbol that represents the need to balance the components of good nutrition and now incorporates physical activity. Federal law also requires meals reimbursed through the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program to be consistent with the DGAs. This session will trace the policy-to-practice chain from the science and processes underlying the DGAs and MyPyramid to implementation in Federal and local school food service. Speakers include experts at each level of the process.
Learning Objectives: 1. At the completion of the session, participants will be able to describe the process used to develop the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid from the underlying science. 2. At the completion of the session, participants will be able to describe key policy considerations in converting the DGAs, the Dietary Reference Intakes and MyPyramid into Federal policy for the school meals programs. 3. At the completion of the session, participants will be able to describe key policy and practical considerations in implementing the DGAs, MyPyramid and Federal school meals policy and in local school food service.
