| The Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations (PHN Section of APHA, ANA, ASTDN, and ACHNE) has endorsed a PHN Section project to ensure a foundation for environmental health in nursing. With grant funds from the Nurses Work Group of Health Care Without Harm, representatives of the PHN Section’s Environmental Health Task Force and each of the Quad Council organizations are developing environmental health principles for nursing and recommendations for their integration into practice, education, research and advocacy. PHN’s are uniquely positioned for environmental health promotion, risk reduction, and early intervention through population focused practice and community-based approaches. PHN knowledge and skills, multi-sector networks, and experience in working with especially vulnerable populations across the life cycle can strengthen understanding of the effects of environmental hazards and how to effectively bring about change in human behavior, public planning, and policy development. However, the attention devoted to environmental health in most nursing education programs and in public health nursing practice is insufficient to address the growing number and complexity of issues facing communities today. The Quad Council is supporting efforts to strengthen PHN’s capacity to engage in environmental health efforts through efforts such as this project. During this session, a draft report will be disseminated to participants, and Quad Council representatives will share perspectives and facilitate discussion among participants. Following this opportunity for review and comment, a monograph will be prepared for broad dissemination among the nursing and public health community to encourage integration of these recommendations into the nursing profession’s practice scope and standards documents. | |||
| Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss environmental health principles, competencies, and standards for public health nursing practice. 2. Propose strategies for substantive integration of environmental health in nursing education, research, and advocacy endeavors; and 3. Consider how nurses can help raise awareness and disseminate information about the essential role of environmental health in public health nursing, foundations for practice, and leadership for change. | |||
