Family Strengthening Strategies to Prevent Substance Abuse
Health risk behaviors such as smoking, physical inactivity, and bad dietary habits are prevalent among youth. This session will explore interventions to prevent children't health risk behaviors. An intervention to improve family functioning will be discussed. Also, the results of a study comparing the prevalence of health risk behaviors among a sample of fifth grade students in two midwestern cities will be examined.
Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss the conceptual approaches used to understand the factors that predict children's health risk behaviors. 2. Analyze the health risk behaviors of a sample of fifth grade students. 3. Describe family strengthening strategies pertinent to the delay of youth smoking and other health risk behaviors among fifth grade children.
