Effective Sanitation and Water Treatment Interventions
Water related illness and access to safe drinking water is consistently a concern in development and health initiatives worldwide. This panel of presentations examines the various levels of access to clean water, and methods of preventing disease through disinfection and environmental clean up in different regions of the world. Panel presentations will include (1) results from a survey of hygiene habits among students in Adana province Turkey and chlorine levels in the water that they consume; (2) results from a baseline survey of hygiene practices and water usage in Yemen, and the implications of these practices for the development of health promotion programs in the region; (3) an overview of Plan International’s Personal Hygiene and Sanitation Education program in Nicaragua, in which children were trained in hygiene and peer education, successfully reducing the incidence of diarrhea and improving water handling practices and (4) results from a cross-sectional survey identifying the usage levels of Klorin, the local socially marketed point of use chlorine water treatment, Nyanza Province of Kenya and any socio-economic barriers that might inhibit its use.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the panel discussions participants will be able to (1) understand some of the hygiene practices and water consumption patterns in different geographical areas and be able to discuss their implications for health promotion programs; (2) identify and discuss various methods of disinfecting water and preventing disease and (3) identify methods of community empowerment for preventing diseases associated with water and sanitation.
