TB DOTS Programs Around the World
Each year, more than 8 million new cases of tuberculosis are reported worldwide. The Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course (DOTS) strategy has been adopted at the international level as the most cost-effective intervention to control this highly infectious disease. This session will address various components of the DOTS strategy, ranging from the implementation process to methods of encouraging private health sector participation. Specifically, the presentations will discuss: (1) the adoption of the DOTS strategy from the national to the state and jurisdictional levels in Mexico; (2) the effect of food supplement incentives program on treatment outcomes in the Tajikistan DOTS program; (3) the potential of pharmacists as effective partners in TB control in the Philippines; (4) TB diagnosis and treatment practices among private sector physicians in the Philippines, and (5)incorporating single practice physicians into public-private partnerships for the control of TB in the Philippines.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to (1) define barriers in implementing DOTS strategy, (2) discuss the role of enablers/incentives in programs involving patient compliance and (3) understand strategies for enlisting private sector health workers in the DOTS strategy for TB control.
