| In recent years there has been a renewed interest in malaria as a serious public health threat, particularly in Africa. Yet, there are still many unanswered questions regarding how to monitor program implementation and measure the effects of interventions. Roll Back Malaria and its partners have been working to establish global standards for monitoring and evaluation of malaria control programs. The presentations have been chosen to represent a variety of perspectives in malaria M&E. The first paper summarizes the global initiative spearheaded by RBM and WHO. The IPT paper examines whether the Africa region will meet the targets it has set for itself in prevention of malaria in pregnancy. The paper on verbal autopsy presents a unique method of using sample vital registration to assess malaria mortality and shows how the data can be used for program planning and policy development. Finally, the fourth paper takes a district-level perspective on assessing whether free distribution of ITNs impacts household ownership and use. Together these papers illustrate the great strides taken to improving M&E of malaria programs at all levels of the health system. | |||
