How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the IUD: Recent Evidence and Country Efforts to Revitalize a Great Contraceptive Method
This panel focuses on the barriers to IUD access and use in the context of providing a balanced method mix and promoting contraceptive choice. It begins with a general overview of recent clinical findings and discusses what can be done to move this research into practice, given the dynamics of change in medical settings. Several country case studies are presented to demonstrate a variety of effective program models of service delivery and marketing of the IUD. This panel provides participants with insights on the most pertinent issues related to IUDs, and outlines strategies and approaches for improving contraceptive choice in FP/RH programs and services.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) Identify barriers to IUD access and use; 2) Articulate recent IUD findings and the challenges inherent in moving research into practice in medical settings; 3) Describe a range of service delivery models and country case studies aimed at addressing barriers to IUD access and use; 4) Understand the causes of low demand for IUDs and the role of satisfied clients, IUD marketing, and promotion efforts in revitalization efforts; 5) Identify the various components to a holistic approach to IUD revitalization and assess which activities their organizations/programs might undertake.
