Scaling-up of Reproductive Health Programs: Lessons Learned around the World
Reproductive health indicators remain poor in many countries despite decades of innovative, successful small-scale projects. Accordingly, there is a need to be able to identify strategies to expand or replicate such projects. This panel includes a step-by-step methodological framework on scaling up model reproductive health projects, along with case studies of scaling up drawn from around the world, including Nigeria, Turkey, Bangladesh, Bolivia and Mexico. The case studies cover varied contexts and content (ranging from process-intensive education and planning initiatives, to more technical medical interventions). This panel includes the value and lessons of: advocacy and creating an enabling environment; strategic and coordinated expansion; creating financial sustainability; training and follow-up; and monitoring, evaluation, and operations research.
Learning Objectives: 1. A methodological framework and specific steps for scaling up reproductive health projects and health projects generally. 2. The challenges faced and lessons learned in scaling up specific RH programs from around the world, ranging from post-abortion care to sexuality education and family planning.
