Alternative and Complementary Health Practices and Chronic Diseases
Alternative and complementary health practices have been used to manage chronic diseases. This session addresses several aspects of ACHP applied in chronic disease care. Topics include the feasibility and potential effectiveness of a massage intervention aimed at enhancing the well-being of family caregivers and their loved ones receiving hospice care; predictors of CAM use in children with asthma and whether CAM use predicts asthma medication regimen the relationship between obesity and selected CAM modalities such as acupuncture, dietary supplementation ,spirituality and specialized diets; and insight into acupuncture use in the US with implications relevant to public health research and policy.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Recognize the potential benefits of a conceptual framework that integrates massage therapy intervention with end-of-life care. 2. Identify the predictors of CAM use and their relationship with CAM use and anti-inflammatory medication regimen in children with asthma 3. Examine selected CAM modalities for weight loss treatment of young adults 4. Describe the profile of and major reasons for acupuncture use in the US.
