Growing Prevalence of Alternative and Complementary Health Practices: Challenges and Opportunities for Professionals and Consumers
Alternative and complementary health practices have become increasingly popular. This session will address challenges and opportunities for professionals. Issues addressed include the frequency and type of CAM use and attitudes toward CAM use among different populations, CAM practices among patients, the value of loving kindness meditation in promoting civic engagement, and the role of institutional programmatic reform and academic collaboration in creating a system to conduct effective outcomes-oriented research in CAM to best meet defined public health agenda.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the prevalence of CAM use in a college population 2. Explain how a Loving kindness meditation practice could promote a service learning agenda 3. Determine the extent of the use of, and attitudes toward, CAM practices among patients treated by a large Southeastern healthcare system 4. Identify the role of institutional programmatic reform and academic collaboration in creating a system to conduct effective outcomes-oriented research in CAM to best meet defined public health agenda.
