| This session presents findings of various program related to abstinence only or comprehensive sexuality education in the schools. The Girls Shape the Future has a rigorous evaluation design formulated and the baseline findings will be presented. The Health Teens Building Health Schools Project is a school-based behavioral trial that examines the impact of abstinence-until-marriage and comprehensive sex education among middle school students. Participants in both programs demonstrated changes in beliefs and behaviors. Long-term implications of the findings will be discussed. Evaluation of Title V-funded abstinence-only programs in Texas will be presented. From a multi-phase, multi-method evaluation findings will be presented with cautions and considerations for future evaluations and program planning. A linear hierarchical model was used to evaluate an intervention designed to delay sexual initiation among fifth graders followed through the sixth grade in Washington DC schools. Results showed a positive impact of the intervention on knowledge of puberty of the opposite gender among both genders. | |||
| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session the participants will be able to: 1. Identify key characteristics of abstinence-until-marriage and comprehensive sex education programs. 2. Describe the types of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that are thought to be related to initiation of sexual intercourse at an early age. 3. Explain changes in sexual behavior that students experienced following participation in abstinence-only education programs. 4. Identify issues related to on-going evaluation of sexuality education. | |||
