Obesity and Physical Activity: Meeting the Challenge of the New Epidemic
Obesity is a complex health problem that is connected to sedentary lifestyles. The rates of women who are overweight or obese are staggering. Rigorous research and practice strategies are needed to identify influential factors that inhibit and promote physical activity as a strategy to end the obesity epidemic. This session will feature presentations that meet this challenge. Social support for physical activity is an important interpersonal determinant of women's participation, especially among African American women. Advertisements in Black women's magazines promote poor dietary choices. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are key time periods in women's lives and may negatively affect weight management. Lastly, the role of health care providers in addressing the obesity epidemic is examined.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, the participant will be able to (1) discuss the relationship between obesity and physical activity; (2) explain the role of social support in promoting an active lifestyle; (3) describe the implications of advertisements on women's lifestyle choices; (4) explore the relationship between pregnancy and the postpartum period on obesity; and (5) explain the potential role of health care providers in confronting the obesity epidemic.
