| Each year, many people are affected by violence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that in 2001 there were over 20,000 homicides, 30,000 suicides and more than two million nonfatal violence-related injuries in the United States. Posters in this session describe the problem, identify risk-factors for, as well as examine interventions for reducing the burden of this preventable public health problem. | |||
| Learning Objectives: Identify important historical factors of violently injured patients. Identify characteristics of hospital admissions that correlate with later suicide death among male and female patients. Recognize racial disparities in firearm violence as a serious public health concern. Discuss factors contributing to increased suicide rates in rural communities. | |||
