Poisonings and Unintentional Injuries
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for children on year of age and older, and poisonings are the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths. This session will examine national estimates of poisoning-related injuries, unintentional medication-related deaths, injuries to older children in seatbelts, pedestrian injuries in suburban communities, and the use of protective equipment among high school athletes.
Learning Objectives: Assess the impact of an expanded definition for poisoning. Understand the epidemiology of medication-related deaths. Describe the risk factors for injury for older children in motor vehicle crashes. Recognize the impact pedestrian injuries may have on the health of suburban communities. Describe prevalence of high school athletes’ discretionary protective equipment usage.
