Community Based Surveillance
In this session, the learner will hear about using the BRFSS to measure quality of life and working with poison control centers to monitor prescription drug abuse/misuse. The learner will also hear about the importance of keeping surveillance data on gunshot injuries and death. Lastly, the importance of collecting asthma health-related indicators at the local level will be discussed.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. List risk behaviors whose prevalence appears to be similar among both non-Hispanic white and Mexican American males and females living on the Texas-Mexico border 2. Recognize the strengths of using Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to measure population based health-related quality of life (HRQOL) using the Healthy Days measures 3. Discuss the importance of maintaining a data surveillance system of gunshot injuries and deaths 4. List which asthma indicators are important to county and local-level advocates 5. Discuss monitoring prescription drug abuse/misuse using Poison Centers
