Conference of Emeritus Members Session: Social Justice and Public Health: Challenges and Opportunities
Social justice is the philosophical underpinning of public health. Public health professionals, in their mission to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy, must address social injustice issues in our nation and elsewhere in the world. This presentation will focus on social injustice as it affects specific groups in society including racial and ethnic minorities, women, children, and older people and specific areas of work in public health, and will outline an agenda for public health workers in addressing issues of social injustice. George Karageorgiou, President of the Student Assembly, will serve as a discussant of the presentation.
Learning Objectives: After this presentation, attendees will be able to: 1. List and describe the major social injustice issues that threaten the health of the public; and 2. List and describe actions that public health workers can undertake to address these issues.
