From Ache To Bayou Gauche: Public Health Disasters
Globalization is one of the most influential factors affecting public health in the 21st century. Much attention has been placed on emergency preparedness and protection of the public’s health since September 11, 2001. This session will take a global view of natural public health disasters and their impact on population health in this century. From the mass devastation of the tsunami to the almost routine, yet equally significant preparation and response to hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, there are lessons to be learned which can be applied to local, state, national and global public health readiness and response. The speakers for this session will address the extent of the affect on population health as well as the application potential into public health practice, education, and research for lessons learned from these significant events.
Learning Objectives: Describe the American Red Cross experiences in assuring the health of populations affected by natural disasters, such as the Tsunami and other similar events. Describe a state health officer’s perspective in assuring the health of populations affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes and other similar events. Identify common elements between public health preparedness in natural disasters and man-made disasters.
