Acknowledging Culture in Health Education
Speakers in this panel will describe a variety of programs, including television-delivered health promotion, a physician-based intervention, and telephone and face-to-face education. Each of the panelists will discuss the particular cultural sensitivities incorporated in their programs, which addressed Native Americans, Asian Americans and African Americans. The presentation will highlight implications for effective health education and health promotion among culturally diverse communities.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify specific cultural factors that may influence behaviors toward chronic disease risks and screening; and
  2. Describe programs adapted for African-American women and men, Native Americans and Asian Americans to improve the effectiveness of health education.
