Communicating Risk: Understanding Audience Perceptions and Information Dissemination
Risk communication is an important strategy for influencing public perceptions and behaviors related to various health risks. Effective risk communication relies upon specific principles and methods. The speakers in this panel will describe risk communication activities addressing various health risks, from bioterrorism threats to chronic disease. This session will discuss the importance and implications of risk communication for public health.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify factors that influence audience perception of risk from various health threats;
  2. Describe risk communication strategies to convey information about anthrax, smallpox, asthma and other health problems; and
  3. Discuss principles of effective risk communication.
