Minority Health Considerations in Health Communication
Health communication strategies generally include tailoring for specific audiences. However, health communication for minority communities must include not only the usual considerations of communication channels but also cultural adaptations. The speakers in this session will describe health communication activities among specific communities, including Hmong, Hispanic/Latino and African-American. Presentations will describe the communities and the considerations made in developing effective health communication messages.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the cultural issues that influence development of health communication messages for Hmong communities;
  2. Discuss strategies for ensuring health communication messages are appropriately tailored for specific minority populations; and
  3. Explain how health communication strategies can be applied in health promotion campaigns among minority communities.
