Healthcare Access for LGBT: Looking at the Facts, Examining Predictors, and Implementing Programs
Although substantial documentation of healthcare disparities exists for the general public, particularly racial and ethnic minorities, less literature is available documenting disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) populations. The presentations in this session will describe available documentation of disparities as well as the application of the principles of cultural competence in the delivery of healthcare for LGBT clients. Speakers will also describe specific interventions, one for smoking cessation and one to develop LGBT youth as organizers for healthy communities.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify correlates of access to healthcare for LGBT populations;
  2. Explain the application of the principles of cultural competence to the provision of care for LBT clients; and
  3. Describe the development of interventions specifically tailored to address LGBT communities.
