Health Care and Health Promotion for Special Populations
Within the general public, certain populations have specific needs that should drive the development of health promotion activities designed to reach them. The speakers in this session will discuss the implications of health literacy for health education, the importance of cultural competence and its reciprocal nature, and describe interventions designed to address specific audiences with specific health promotion messages.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Define cultural competence as a reciprocal process comprising both consumer and provider cultural competence;
  2. Describe the principles of health literacy; and
  3. Explain the implications of cultural, racial and/or socioeconomic factors for health promotion programs to address chronic disease prevention and cancer screening.
