Folic Acid Education and Promotion Programs Aimed at Various Targets
The focus of this session is on strategies to promote folic acid consumption to reduce birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. Speakers will describe interventions including multivitamin distribution and health education, as well as messages targeting health care providers. While these presentations focus on the issue of folic acid intake, the strategies and lessons learned have broad implications for health education and health promotion across various health issues.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe programs designed to increase folic acid consumption;
  2. Identify factors that contribute to the success of health education interventions; and
  3. Discuss strategies for reaching health care providers with a public health message.
