The Costs of War, Part II: Generating Dialogue and Promoting Community Response
This interactive session is a continuation of The Costs of War: Consequences of Service to U.S. Soldiers, Their Loved Ones, and Their Communities. Its purpose is to explore the range of current and potential prevention efforts, i.e., primary, secondary, and tertiary, applicable to the issues raised by panelists and session participants. This session is specifically designed to consider the experiences of participants who are members of a military family and impacted by the Iraq War, or who have worked, or are working, with Iraq War veterans and/or their families in order to illuminate the issues they have identified. This will be achieved by engaging participants in problem posing questions, including, but not limited to the following: 1) What is the role of those who work within the military as providers of health services; 2) What are the roles and responsibilities of health educators, researchers, and service providers outside of the military; 3) How can session participants facilitate appropriate responses at each of the prevention levels; 4) What are the existing gaps in services; and 5) What might optimal support, services, and care look like?
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Articulate the role(s) of health educators, researchers, and service providers in addressing the needs of soldiers and their families;
  2. Identify potential collaborators to develop networks of service provision;
  3. Develop a plan to advocate for appropriate, necessary and sufficient mental health services for soldiers, their families, and other loved ones; and
  4. Describe potential public health actions and/or interventions at each of the three levels of prevention.
