| Overview-Disease control and prevention on a global scale is becoming more evident as country-specific epidemics are crossing geographic boundaries at an increased rate. Surveillance and tracking methods play a role in prevention and control. In this session, the validity of surveillance methods such as screening questionnaires for lead poisoning will be examined. Factors that are associated with adolescent health behaviors that lead to delinquency and diminished health status in rural communities will also be identified. Improved testing methods for new US threats such as West Nile Virus will be presented. The link among and older and ever-increasing US threats such as lung cancer will be investigated in relation to occupation and length of residence in a specific geographic location. In addition, GIS mapping and analysis methods will be presented including the following: surveillance of positive rabies raccoon specimens in Nassau County; analysis of the benefits of radon education in McLean county; examination of the association between levels of ozone concentration and emergency department admissions for cardiovascular and respiratory conditions in small local areas. | |||
| Learning Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: 1) Identify lung cancer risk factors for urban populations due to environmental perturbations; 2) Identify health indicators correlated with sprawl and segregation in large US cities and define and explain dissimilarity and sprawl indices; 3) Recognize linkages between community disorganization/design and drug usage and violence; 4) Identify the procedure for assessing the soil heavy metal investigation; 5) Understand the merits of applying geostatistics and GIS to analyze ozone exposures and health outcomes at the small area level (e.g., ZIP codes); 6) Assess the role of geocoded information in community policy development; 7) Recognize the existence of medically unexplained symptoms associated with modern warfare; 8) Understand the transmission of West Nile Virus and improved West Nile testing procedures. | |||
