Built Environment Institute III: Building partnerships in land use and community design decision-making

Decisions about the built urban environment are often made without regard for their potential impact on a community's health. This session addresses creative approaches to environmental assessment, planning and development activities. It explores 1) land use information as a proxy for air toxics monitoring data, 2) investigates approaches to developing partnerships among local developers, public planners, property managers, and municipal agencies, and 3) provides examples of case studies that include health impact assessment tools and land use practices and policy inclusions into master plans, trails/open space plans and street design to positively impact health through improved community design.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to 1) identify three creative approaches to environmental assessment, planning and development; 2) discuss case studies that include health impact assessment and land use practices; and 3) understand how to include policies and land use practice information into master plans, trails/open space plans and street design at the community level.
