Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this institute is to provide a basic introduction to epidemiologic concepts and methods for public health workers, communicators, and policy analysts who are not clear about the key descriptors of the health of populations, measures of disease occurrence, and assessing the effects of adverse health exposures. Trends in mortality and incidence of several diseases will be discussed in the context of the epidemiologic transition in an aging population and comparisons between industrialized and developing countries. Examples of the key epidemiologic study designs used to discover new risk factors will be discussed with emphasis given to understanding the potential pitfalls encountered in the interpretation of such data and how they can be avoided. The concept of causality in multi-factorial disease processes in human populations will be explored in the context of regulatory decisions and prevention programs.
