Health Issues of South Asian Populations in the U.S.
South Asian Americans (individuals with origins from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and other areas of the diaspora) are the third largest Asian American Pacific Islander American group, totaling almost 2 million. Moreover, the South Asian American population has more than doubled between 1990 and 2000, with some subpopulations increasing by almost 250% (Bangladeshis). Despite this rapid population growth, little attention has been paid to health issues facing South Asian Americans. Furthermore, much of the scant literature has focused on the biomedical influences on South Asian health disparities, most notably cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The purpose of this session is to shed light on various health issues facing South Asian subpopulations and to understand their sociocultural determinants, as highlighted in the following presentations:
Learning Objectives: 1) To understand emerging and/or understudied health issues in South Asian communities, domestically and globally. 2) To elucidate various influences on health behaviors and overall well-being in South Asian subpopulations. 3) To recognize the intersection between various cultural factors and implications for public health research, practice, and care delivery
