Innovative Theories and Strategies to Improve the Health of Asian American and Immigrant Communities
This session will focus on innovative theories and successful strategies that are being implemented to improve the health of Asian American and Immigrant Communities in the United States. Discussion will focus on: how to strengthen the disaggregation of Asian American statistics in conducting research, and how community-based participatory research helps support preventative screening measures for women. In addition, a presentation on four consecutive studies conducted in Boston Chinatown on childhoold asthma screening and education in Cantonese-speaking immigrant families, as well as a presentation on research regarding the role of alcohol among Asian American adolescents will also address the need for more resources for additional research into these issues.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the distribution of smoking among Asian Americans by sex, ethnic ancestry, age, education, income, and nativity, and compare findings with those obtained from previous studies; 2. Understand the application of community-based participatory research (CBPR) to the Vietnamese American community; 3. Learn about a conceptual framework for asthma screening and education among children from Cantonese-speaking immigrant families; and, 4. Understand how parent, friends, and intrapersonal factors impact sexual intercourse behavior in Asian American adolescents.
