Managing Chronic Diseases Among American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians
This session is designed to introduce attendees to approaches that are used by American Indian and Alaska Native health care professionals to deal with chronic illnesses among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Underlying all four abstracts is the notion that there can be demonstrated improvements in health outcomes if traditional American Indian and Alaska Native ways of dealing with states of illness are used rather than standard "Western" medical approaches. However it is also clear from the four abstracts that when dealing with chronic care issues the approach should not be either a traditional approach or a "Western" approach but rather a combination of both approaches. The combination of abstracts also demonstrate that measurable process is being made in dealing with chronic sicknesses among these two indigenous groups and hold out the hope that there will continue to be measurable process.
Learning Objectives: 1. Attendees will be able to cite at least two traditional approaches that have demonstrated successful interventions in chronic illnesses among indigenous groups in the United States. 2. Attendees will be able to cite data indicating the success of traditional approaches to dealing with chronic illnesses among indigenous groups in the United States. 3. Attendees will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the location of at least two indigenous groups on the mainland United States that have used approaches that are traditional to those groups for dealing with chronic illnesses.
