This presentation will address the evolving scope of practice for nurses in public health emergency/disaster response situations. The presentation is based on the results of a survey on state differences and similarities of the authorities for nursing practice during public health emergency/disaster responses. It will also compare limitations on the scope of practice during such events. Finally, there will be a discussion of changes that could improve responses effectiveness for nurses.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the current scope of practice for nurses in a disaster. Discuss changes needed to make responses more effective.
• Discuss the results of the survey to the Chief Nurses of each State on nurses scope (roles and under what authorities) during disaster or emergency preparedness and response events
