Joy F. Reed, EdD, North Carolina Department of Health, Office of Public Health Nursing and Professional Development, 1915 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699, 919 733-7081, Joy.Reed@ncmail.net

This presentation will address the evolving scope of practice for nurses in public health emergency/disaster response situations. The presentation is based on the results of a survey on state differences and similarities of the authorities for nursing practice during public health emergency/disaster responses. It will also compare limitations on the scope of practice during such events. Finally, there will be a discussion of changes that could improve responses effectiveness for nurses.
