Abstract #121666

Application of NREPP criteria to manualized treatment

Richard Finkbiner, PhD, NREPP, Manila Consulting Group, 6707 Old Dominion Drive, Suite 315, McLean, VA 22101, 571 633 9797, rfinkbiner@manilaconsulting.net

The National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP) is designed to meet SAMHSA's objective identifying and verifying the effectiveness of the elements of care for mental health and substance abuse disorders. NREPP focuses on the effect size of outcomes and the methodological quality of the evidence for the outcomes in assessing the effectiveness of protocols and treatment practices submitted for consideration. Manualized treatment provides a potential balance between recognition of the value of the individual therapeutic relationship and use of a proven therapeutic technique. In applying NREPP criteria to manualized treatments, however, pilot tests found that reports of effectiveness research on these practices often contain unnecessary omissions or contradictions that reduce the credibility of the evidence. This presentation will guide attendees through the process that NREPP applies to a set of articles and papers describing manualized treatment for a condition, explaining how the criteria would apply.
