An overview of the public health ramifications of trafficking of women forced into working as prostitutes in the commercial sex industry, and labor in domestic service, sweatshops and other sites will be discussed. The health problems faced by these women include sexually transmitted and other systemic diseases, work related illnesses and bodily injury, chemical dependence, and mental and emotional health problems. Current US legislation aimed at combating the problem through the identification and prosecution of traffickers, and the provision of assistance to victims through the “Campaign to Rescue and Restore Victims of Human trafficking” administered by the US Department of Health and Human Services will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

• Define human trafficking for the purpose of forced labor or prostitution with a focus on women and review the US government's efforts to combat the problem and assist the victims.
