It is 10 years since The Fourth World Conference On Women: Action, Equality, Development, and Peace in Beijing to advance women in health, education, and social and political status. However, conservative forces have been successful in minimizing progress in this endeavor. Understanding the national and global forces that oppose advancement for women is necessary if changes are to be made. Implications for public health nurses and others interested in the public health of women will be discussed.

• Understand the national and worldwide forces opposing the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and women's advancement.
