Dr. George Silver was one of the pillars of “social medicine” in the United States. From his 15-year work as Director of the Division of Social Medicine at Montefiore Hospital to his service starting in 1965 as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, where he was one of the architects of Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty, Dr. Silver was a powerful advocate of education, research and practice in social medicine. In 1969 he was named Professor of Public Health at Yale's School of Public Health, where he was known as an outstanding teacher. This session will be devoted to a celebration of the many facets of the life of George Silver, with comments from Oliver Fein, Bernard Guyer, William Kissick, Barbara Krimgold, Philip Lee, Max Pepper, Susan Reverby, Victor Sidel, Jane Silver, Sidney Wolfe and others.
