Abstract #120152

Federal reporting on minority health over the past 20 years

Diane Makuc, DrPH, Office of Analysis and Epidemiology, National Center for Health Statistics, 3311 Toledo Road, Room 6108, Hyattsville, MD 20782, 301-458-4360, DMakuc@cdc.gov

The 1985 Report of the Secretary's Task Force on Black and Minority Health released by then Secretary of Health and Human Services, Margaret Heckler, documented significant disparities in the burden of illness and mortality experienced by Blacks and other minority groups in the US population. The report laid out an ambitious agenda, including improving minority access to high quality health care, expanding health promotion and health education outreach activities, increasing the number of minority health care providers, and enhancing Federal and State data collection activities to better report on minority health issues. This presentation provides an overview of its primary findings and describes highlights from some Federal efforts to monitor progress in minority health over the past 20 years. Health, United States, the Secretary's annual report on the health status of the U.S. population has provided information on trends in the health of racial and ethnic groups for more than 20 years. Healthy People 2010 builds on health promotion and disease prevention initiatives pursued over the past two decades and includes a goal of eliminating health disparities. Measurement of progress towards eliminating racial and ethnic disparities is a major focus of Healthy People 2010. Most recently, starting in 2003, the annual National Healthcare Disparities Report provides a comprehensive national overview of disparities in health care among racial and ethnic groups.
