Our session will address research needs pertaining to both emerging issues and populations. From a visionary approach, we will address issues related to services and systems as an area of MCH research focus. In the methodological area, we will discuss the important role of national surveys in MCH research: monitoring progress; establishing benchmarks; and suggesting new directions for more focused research. As an example of examining new developments in a frequently studied topic, we will provide an historical perspective and discuss new approaches to conducting prenatal care research. At the population level, we will address the needs of a very large emergent population of U.S. immigrant families and their children. This session intends to complement and be a follow up of last year's session on the ”Future of MCH research” that was based on a life cycle approach. This session would be of interest to both experienced and new investigators, as well as consumers of research such as practitioners, faculty and students.
