Michele Maiers, DC, Northwestern Health Sciences University, 2501 W 84th Street, Bloomington, MN 55431, 952-888-4777 x158, mmaiers@nwhealth.edu

Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) has undertaken a 12-month pilot project to implement “best practices” in the context of a quality assurance system. The goal of this initiative is to optimize the quality of diagnosis and therapeutic management of low back pain patients within NWHSU outpatient teaching clinics. Evidence based healthcare principles will be used to inform clinical decision making, as will the standardized assessment of outcomes and a priori determined quality indicators. The purpose of the pilot project is to assess the overall feasibility of adopting a best practices system for all providers within the NWHSU clinic system, and to develop a template for effective implementation of best practices that can serve as a model for other healthcare educational institutions and clinics.
