Abstract #112755

Building public health capacity in Canada

David Mowat, MD and Geoffrey S. Gurd, PhD. Public Health Agency of Canada, 130 Colonnade Rd., Al 6503C, Ottawa, ON K1A 0K9, Canada, 613 954-8429, geoffrey_gurd@phac-aspc.gc.ca

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) came into being on September 24, 2004. Canada's first Chief Public Health Officer was appointed at the same time. The major components of the PHAC came from the former Public and Population Health Branch of Health Canada. The presentation will begin with a very brief description of PHAC. The overall focus is on describing the field epidemiology program, the skills enhancement for health surveillance program, and the six components of the scholarship and fellowship training program. The Canadian Field Epidemiology Program (CFEP) was established in 1975 at the request of Canadian provinces and territories to provide specialized training for health professionals in the practice of applied epidemiology. The CFEP was modeled after the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The skills enhancement program is a series of bilingual internet-based courses available in facilitated and unfacilitated formats. The courses are designed for working public health practitioners. The scholarship program is designed to support doctoral and post-doctoral studies in public and population health, faculty and course development in university programs, community medicine residency slots in medical schools, the training needs of local public health organizations, and public health chairs. The chairs are designed to bridge the academic world with public health practice settings.
