The burden of cancer continues to disproportionately affect certain ethnic and racial populations. If change is going to take place with respect to reducing cancer health disparities, an influx of human and economic resources is needed. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown its commitment to addressing these disparities, by developing young scientists through a variety of training and career development programs in cancer research. NCI's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) has implemented strategic goals to increase opportunities for young scientists to participate in evidence-based activities in reducing health disparities, such as exploring the influence of health policy on sustainability of programs. The professional development and enhancement of young men and women interested in cancer health disparities will ensure an emerging racially and ethnically diverse cadre of basic, clinical, behavioral, and population scientists trained to work collaboratively. These scientists will use their knowledge to translate discoveries into effective cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship strategies, and beyond, in the area of cancer health disparities. The practical experience earned while working toward completion of degrees or taking steps toward career development is priceless. Since there is no charted path for looking for an internship, we would like to share some of our experiences. This discussion will focus on training opportunities and will be facilitated by individuals who have benefited directly from training at the NCI. The multidisciplinary opportunities include internships, fellowships, research training, summer science internships and more.

• Develop major training objectives required to prepare for a successful training experience.
