Abstract #109916

Use of Native American Traditional Health Practices

Larry Murillo, DrPH, MS, Department of Medicine/One Sky Center, Oregon Health and Science University, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, GH232, Portland, OR 97140-3098, 503-418-2166, murillol@ohsu.edu

Few studies have examined specific traditional health practices (THP) used in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) health programs. THP is the practice of medicine people and the AI/AN community with cultural values, practices and knowledge. The purpose of this AI/AN THP research is to raise consideration of culture-based intervention as a legitimate option and examine how THP are used to reduce the health disparity of AI/AN communities. The data analysis from a recently completed study reveals three themes: cultural connection, identity - being Indian, and interaction between western medicine and THP. Cultural connection was a primary component of intervention for AI/AN people who received alcohol treatment. The AI/AN health clinic has become a place of contact to reestablish identity and connection to those health practices that are specific to AI/AN cultures. AI/AN THP as a viable health intervention alternative was the focus of discussion. The use of THP has initiated an interactive role of cultural connection for the AI/AN health agency, the medicine people and the local community. A THP program using a community-based process gives a blueprint for creating or expanding an AI/AN traditional health program.
