Healthy People 2010 is a comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention agenda for the United States. With 467 objectives in 28 focus areas, Healthy People 2010 is designed to improve the health of all people during the first decade of the 21st century. The goal of HP2010 Focus Area 24 Respiratory Diseases is to promote respiratory health through better prevention, detection, treatment, and education efforts. The primary data sources for tracking these objectives are the National Vital Statistics System and National Health Interview Survey. Of the 5 objectives that did not have baseline data at the beginning of the decade in this focus area, 3 became measurable with the release of the 2002 NHIS. Another objective had its definition revised due to changes in NHIS questionnaire, and the definition for chronic pulmonary obstructive disease also changed to exclude asthma. Using data from NVSS, NHIS and other data sources, this presentation will assess progress of the respiratory diseases objectives towards meeting their national targets for the year 2010. Additionally, progress towards the second overarching Healthy People 2010 goal of eliminating health disparities will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to

• Identify the respiratory diseases objectives in the Healthy People 2010 program.
• Identify progress towards the year 2010 target for the measurable respiratory diseases objectives such as
  deaths from asthma and hospitalizations for asthma.
  • Identify disparities among specific respiratory diseases objectives.
  • Become familiar with how the progress quotient is used to assess the progress of the objectives towards their target.
