Native American Cancer Education for Survivors

"Native American Cancer Education For Survivors" (NACES) is a study supported by the Susan G. Komen Foundation (#POP0202135) to develop the initial four interactive, personalized education modules and subsequently by the National Cancer Institute (R25 CA101938) to develop eight more modules. This presentation will demonstrate the technology that allows for the Native cancer patients personal information to help identify high priority topics for that individual patient. Findings from the intake survey will be summarized and used to show how these data have influenced the development of additional modules. The web-based education program includes multiple innovative functions; including, but not limited to: the tailoring of content based on the survivors responses to intake surveys; survivors word choice preferences (e.g., “American Indian”, “Native American”, “Aboriginal”), linking among all available quality of life education topics, the encrypted code names to protect survivors' identity, the cultural relevance of content, the organization of the modules within a QOL Decision Tree (based on the layout of the modules allowing the patient to decide which topics to look at) and the use of Native survivors for streamlined video vignettes. The education resources are accessible through the assistance of a trained Native Patient Advocate or may be accessed directly from the website. Although anyone is welcome to access the QOL information and resources, only the data from the Native cancer survivors are analyzed for increases in QOL and knowledge, click-streams to track which modules are accessed and in which order and so on.
