Abstract #105582

New tools for contraceptive security: Can surveys inform decisions?

Susanna C. Binzen, MPH, Division of Reproductive Health, CDC, MS K-23, 4770 Buford Highway, NE, Atlanta, GA 30341-3724, 860 232-3262, SBinzen@cdc.gov and J. The need and demand for contraceptives worldwide is growing, yet donations to meet those needs are shrinking. Less advantaged countries need to allocate their resources wisely in order to be able to meet their citizens' contraceptive needs. For several decades, the Division of Reproductive Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided technical assistance both in improving contraceptive logistics management and in conducting reproductive health surveys, which obtain essential data on the reproductive health status and needs of women in every region of the world. Recently, CDC has been exploring new ways of using these survey data to help family planning programs improve their “contraceptive security.” Several of these new tools can help programs get a more accurate picture of the quantities of contraceptives needed currently and in the future. Other tools analyze survey data on current contraceptive users as well as non-users to determine in which sub-groups contraceptive use could increase, and which methods are likely to increase in use. With this information, programs can more accurately estimate the number and type of contraceptives that will be needed, and thus can use their resources more effectively. CDC has five instruments in development, which will be presented.
